A rest for His people

God commanded his people in the Torah to maintain a day of rest. This was not to hurt the entrepreneurial spirit, but rather to keep it healthy. Just like fire needs oxygen to breath, humans need rest to function at their highest capacity. The sabbath was made for man. It is a great blessing in my opinion to be commanded to take a rest. However, to some I’m sure this is hard to swallow. I have heard of those who don’t take a day off in ministry because, “the devil never takes a day off”. Well my answer to them is this, God takes a day off and so should we. After all, I want to pattern my life after the Creator, not the destroyer. In order to reflect his image well, we must rest. No business exemplifies this as much as Chick-fil-a. They are closed on Sunday, every Sunday, yet they are one of the top businesses for profit in the quick service food industry. They observe a sabbath and God has blessed. Im reminded of this every time I forget this and go there on a Sunday to eat only to be disappointed, but it’s a good disappointment.
When you are feeling burned out, remember this paradox, that rest will be the oxygen you need to re-ignite the flame.
